Predicting Drug Permeability With a Gut Microphysiological System

Drug permeability is an important parameter when developing new therapeutics because it has implications over the amount of an oral drug that reaches systematic circulation. In recent years, there have been efforts to improve the in vitro models used in preclinical drug development and disease research. In particular the use of microphysiological systems (MPS), also sometimes referred to as organ-on-a-chip (OOC) technologies, has become more widespread. MPS aim to better represent the structural and functional characteristics of human tissues and organ systems.
