# Assessing Mitochondrial Health in Oncology

Mitochondria are maternally inherited, cytoplasmic organelles, that are critical for normal cell function and health. They also play a pivotal role in cancer cells, and are important for tumor initiation, maintenance and growth.

Mitochondrial ATP production provides a more efficient energy source over glycolysis, allowing tumor cells to survive tough nutrient environments. Therefore, it is important to understand the complex relationship between cancer cells and mitochondria, especially when evaluating how metabolic symbiosis promotes drug resistance.
