App Note

Extraction and Recovery of Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances

Paper and board (P&B) food contact materials use commercial additive blends and raw materials that have raised health and regulatory concerns. Polyfluorinated surfactants (PFS) are the main group of chemicals in commercial packaging blends and are a cause of major concern as they can be precursors of poly- and per-fluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS), which have been linked to cancers, decreases in fertility and reduced immune system function. This app note investigates the effect of two particle size reduction techniques, ball milling and blade cutting-grinding, on PFAS recovery in three types of food contact materials.

Discover a PFAS extraction technique that:

  • Reliably detects and quantifies analytes in relatively heavy matrices
  • Can extract analytes of different polarities and matrix-interactions
  • Requires minimal clean up during extraction
