Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) is the measurement of circulating concentrations of a drug to adjust its dosing regimen, so as to reach a defined target exposure associated with optimal efficacy and minimal toxicity. Samples are collected at a known time relative to the administration of the last dose. Early development of TDM is largely attributed to University of California researchers Lewis Sheiner and Stuart Beal, who created NONMEM, a software for pharmacokinetics modeling.
