How Bioprinting Is Advancing Tissue Engineering

Enabled by the recent evolution of printing technology from 2D shapes to 3D structures, bioprinting is the deposition of live cells, extracellular matrix and/or nutrients in a spatially-defined pattern. The technique allows scientists to replicate the heterogeneous cellular and matrix composition of in vivo organs at a millimeter scale, offering more geometrical precision than other tissue engineering strategies. Tissue engineered constructs are useful in both research and the real world.
