Cancer cell lines are created from cells isolated from cancer patients and are transferred and maintained in the laboratory where they continue to grow indefinitely under laboratory conditions. Some cell lines do not continue to divide and so have been genetically modified to allow them to do so. Theses immortalized cell lines can then be used for research purposes.
