When infected with a virus, host cells often display microscopically visible changes that are collectively referred to as a cytopathic effect (CPE). When viruses cause a CPE, it can be a useful tool for various research applications. Thus far, the plaque assay has been the CPE assay of choice; however, this method and its variations are often labor-intensive and have difficulty in achieving high levels of accuracy and reproducibility.
